Ok I've done everything I can think of to fix this here and am now at a total loss. Hoping someone here can see something that I've missed.
Computer:
Macbook Pro 13" 10.6.2 4GB RAM 2.53 cpu, all updates current
When I woke up this morning I woke up my MacBook Pro from sleep like I always do, only this time when I did this the entire operating system promptly hung - spinning beach ball, clicking on anything doesn't work, etc. Waited for a few minutes then hard rebooted the computer. On boot it hung at the gray apple screen with the spinning wheel thingy. Tried rebooting again in verbose mode, noticed it was hanging just after initializing the applecpupowermanagement service (or something similar, can't remember exactly what it was called). So then just for the hell of it I tried booting into my Vista partition, which it did happily. After checking on the status of my normal SL partition through Vista (which appeared normal) I attempted to boot into single user mode. This hung in the same place it had been before and didn't let me get to the command prompt. Next I tried booting into safe mode, where after sitting with the spinning wheel on the gray apple screen for a few minutes it suffered a kernel panic
.
After that I plugged in my external backup hard drive which has a slightly older clone of my SL partition on it and the computer booted to that just fine. I had some initial problems getting the internal hard drive to mount (which led me to suspect drive issues) but eventually I succeeded and updated my backup with the more important stuff that had changed since my last backup (music, pictures, docs, etc.) just in case.
Next I decided to try booting into single user mode on the main HD once more and running fsck. Who knows why, but this time it actually allowed me to proceed to the command prompt and I ran the check, which completed normally. Hopeful that everything would be fine now I attempted to restart normally then it hung and this happened:

Now I was just pissed.. I booted back to my backup clone and ran TechTool for the hell of it to see if it could find any hardware problems, in the process it discovered that the volume structure was totally hosed. I repaired it and for good measure repaired the drive using disk util also and repaired the permissions. More hopeful now I booted back to the main HD in SL and surprise.. it still hung..
Is there anything left to try? I'm running off my backup clone right now. It seems like the boot structure is somehow borked on the main internal SL drive but I don't know how to get it to fix that. If I had a current clone I would just clone it back to the internal and not worry about it but my clone is a few weeks old and I don't feel like dealing with the cleanup if I don't have to.
Appreciate any insight.
Edit: Realized that something that I did do just before putting it to sleep for the night was run the latest bonjour update through software update. Probably has nothing to do with this though.
