HV20 audio issues

I just got Canon's HV20 and the audio from captured video with external mic is noiser than with the internal mic. It's a little SONY a friend lent me.

I'm wondering if it matters whether the mic is balanced/unbalanced, stereo/mono?

I'm a bit baffled.
