This happened to me last year.. and I know it happened to a lot of others as well and will continue to happen.

If you lost your iphone (like i did) and bought a new iPhone it didnt extend your contract for another 2 years.

If you lose the 16gb 3G and buy a new one you get it at the semi-unsubsidized price of 499 i think... but do you need to add an additional 2 years to your plan?

I don't like the idea of being tethered to at&t any longer than I have to be ;):D
 
No. You're paying the unsubsidized price so there isn't an extension in contract.
 
My understanding is that, in the case of loss or damage, I would be paying the full, no-commitment price to replace it ...without renewing my contract. If I chose to use the 'early upgrade' pricing option, it would require a contract renewal (it does now, why would a replacement be any different?).

Has anybody lost or damaged their iPhone 3G to know for sure?
