Suppose I go ahead and purchase a rMBP 13", with the education discount and the $100 apple gift card promotion, and after two weeks, I decide that I don't like the machine and return it. Am I obligated to return the $100 gift card as well?

Now, of course, I don't intend to stoop that low just to receive a free gift card at Apple's expense, but I was curious. I am sure Apple has thought about that scenario. I am assuming Apple activates the gift card after your two week return period is over. Otherwise, it will end up being a nightmarish scenario.

I think they refund you a hundred dollars less and you get to keep the gift card. So if you paid 1100 plus received a 100 gift card they would refund you 1000 dollars and you would keep the gift card. I could be wrong about this but I heard from someone that it worked like this.

Laco is right. It's all in the fine print:

*Buy a qualifying Mac and receive a $100 App Store Gift Card, or buy a qualifying iPad or iPhone and receive a $50 App Store Gift Card. The Mac or iPad must be purchased from Apple or a participating Apple Authorized Campus Store from July 2, 2013, through September 6, 2013. iPhone devices must be purchased from Apple; Apple Authorized Campus Store iPhone purchases are not eligible. iPhone eligibility may vary by model. Purchaser must be eligible for Apple Education Individual Pricing; education pricing is not available for iPad or iPhone. Quantity limits may apply. The App Store Gift Card may be used on the Mac App Store, the iTunes Store, the App Store, and the iBookstore. If the Mac, iPhone, or iPad is returned, your refund may be reduced by the full amount of the App Store Gift Card. Terms and conditions apply. The Mac App Store, the iTunes Store, the App Store, and the iBookstore are available only to persons age 13 or older in the U.S. Terms apply. See www.apple.com/legal/itunes/terms.html for more information.

Yeah, amazingly they probably don't appreciate people like you trying to rip them off.

No...no...no...

You got it all wrong. It's just a "Hypothetical Scenario". If it's just a "Hypothetical Scenario" no one would ever think of actually trying the scam.

Please...it's just a "Hypothetical Scenario"!

Sorry, I don't believe in hypothetical situations, it's like lying to your brain.
