Picture the scene - 2 months hence and the new 3G iPhone is the only one on sale now. My 2G iPhone is still within its 12 month manufacturer's warranty. Lets say something happens to it which is covered by the warranty. Do I get a 3G replacement or do they find a refurbed model somewhere down the back of a metaphorical sofa?

You wont get the new one... they will replace it with a refurbished 2G iPhone. Just because none are for sale on the online store doesnt mean they dont have a fat stock of refurbs for just this situation.
