I have been using my 12" Macbook for work and it works just fine, I just figured that I might get a machine for work. What do you think?

Why not just repurpose one of your two MacBooks to be a personal device you use at work? Does your work require a VPN or a profile that allows them access to your data? If so, then this might push me to get a work machine.

My work does. So I'll bring my MBP to work as a note taking machine, a means of communicating with my wife, and a note taker, but all work is done on a work provided XPS 15 because it has to be connected to an Active Directory to work with the code and the servers provided for the job.

I can't imagine trying to decide to use three machines or not. I find I'm happier with less devices but each device has its purpose. One iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. I would never want two MacBooks, two iPads, or two iPhones.

I agree with BigMcGuire. I have my own business and I've found that having dedicated devises is better than more devises.

I just got a 2017 12" MB that I now carry as my personal/work machine. It's light and portable and battery is good enough on the go. I have a HUB & Monitor setup at work and use it on my lap otherwise.

I have a 2015 13" MBP that I can use at home if I need a larger screen, but overall it's un-used.
I also have a 2011 13" MBA that is also un-used since I got the 12".

Having ONE main computer for all has been...freeing...to say the least.

If you are using a computer for work - then its just a capital expense that should contribute to your business making more money. Ask yourself if buying a brand new Air will make you more money than what you can earn with your existing 2017 machines. If you honestly can come up with a rational reason why, then the answer is obvious. Otherwise, your primary focus in the business should be minimize expenses to revenue.

since all you provide are details of the year and model of currently owned machines, yet do not indicate what you do or why current machines are not sufficient, then the answer is clear.

people who earn USD 50,000 per year can do well on only this amount.
people who earn USD 180,000 per year can do well on only this amount.
the more money a person has, the more money that person needs.

The main reason I was thinking about it was so I wouldn't have to carry my personal devices around everyday and could have one laptop I take everyday to work. It isn't a must or anything though.
