Installed Lion on Wednesday on late 2009 MBP with 4 GB Ram. Kernel Panics started happening intermittently and seemingly without any common link. Used disk utility to repair permissions and repair disk. Reinstalled Lion. Still happening.

If you can read a Unix file, please take a look and make any suggestions. I have tried to post the portions that appear to be relevant to the crashes.

I am right at the point of just reinstalling Snow Leopard and waiting a few months for the updates.

Thank you for whatever assistance you can provide.

One of yesterday's crashes:

I've got a similar crash happening and I can reproduce it... Maybe you can try reproducing my crash... might be the same?

1) find a PDF
2) open the PDF in preview
3) set it to "locked" (click the document name in the title bar)
4) close preview
5) quicklook the locked PDF and scroll
6) crash!

Let me know what happens!

Thanks,
- David

From the log, I see that it was some sort of media that was trying to be played in Firefox. I remember reading somewhere that Flash and CS5 weren't playing too well with Lion.

Were you using Flash when it crashed?

If so, I've been using the flash player plug in for Chrome and it's seemed to be working fine... so, I'd try that!

Let me know if this works :D

You might want to post the kernel panic log itself....not just entries from the system.log

Try looking in: /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

See if there is a panic report in there and post.

-Kevin

1st crash:
Install (not just update) the latest, Lion-compatible version of Parallels, Firefox and the Flash Player Plugin. Disable all plugins within Firefox, and enable them only, if you need them. Perform a clean installation of Lion, and DO NOT use older software from a previous Snow Leopard installation under Lion.

Parallels (i recommend VMware Fusion)
Firefox
Adobe Flash Player Plugin

2nd crash:
Looks like some incompatible applications. Try to install the newest version!

clarification

When you say clean install of the various software packages, am I correct in guessing that you mean, delete the current and then install the new ones?
With regard to Lion, I did the last re-install by rebooting and holding down R then following the prompts. Is there another method you would recommend?
Thank you.

To Davecap

David:
I everything I opened in preview was showing as locked, and I am sure they are not all. Maybe a sign of something else. I have no clue.

To Hasseo

The various panics have come when I was in outlook, when I was in firefox with and without playing flash video, and when I was away and the MBP was by itself.

I apologize for my ignorance, but what does unloading as kernel extension entail?
Thank you for your help!

I think I read somewhere online that they provide an uninstaller for that player. Their uninstaller would remove any kernel extensions added.

Just trashing the app might not.

If you see all your kernel extensions that are loaded by opening Terminal and typing:

kextstat

and pressing return.

If you don't see this players extension listed after uninstalling.....that means it's been removed.

Most of the kernel extensions listed will be com.apple.XXX

These are usually all fine, as they are provided by Apple. Any not matching that would come from 3rd parties and might be what is causing the issue.

Would Appcleaner do an adequate job of removal?

Deleted Elmedia Player.

I downloaded the uninstaller and removed elmedia player. I checked for the extension. So now I guess I will sit back and wait...and pray for no more panics.
Thank you for the help!

Glad it worked....so far.

If you get another panic.....post the log here.

Good luck!

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Glad it worked....so far.

If you get another panic.....post the log here.

Good luck!

Thank you again. Once I removed the elmedia player, everything was fine.
I really appreciate the help. I was dreading going back to 10.6.

That's awesome. If you really like it, contact elmedia and send them the panic logs. maybe they will have an updated version for Lion.
