I am upgrading a macbook pro 17" to 2gb does the machine gain from dual channel memory?

Ie, should I install two of the same exact memory chips?

You would likely see very slight gains from using matched RAM. It seems to be more important for machines like the MacBook and Mac mini that have integrated graphics. Do you have a reason not to use matched chips? If you already have a 1 GB stick in there, I wouldn't worry about replacing it with ones that are known to match. I'd just buy a single stick matched as closely as possible to the current stick and hope that they'll run in dual-channel mode. If not, it's not a terrible loss and it's better than spending another $100.

How can you tell if it's running in dual–channel mode?
