I was in the Apple store today picking up snow leopard and the guy infront of me was talking about ipods and asked if any price drops will be coming. The Apple genius said he should wait because there are holding an event on September 9th and there are many good things coming. I then asked him more about it when he was getting me snow leopard and he said yes there is an event on the 9th and Apple will anounce it this week sometime.

He is probably not 100% certain, he probably has just heard the rumours like the rest of us and is advising accordingly. Apple do not tell store employees anything until the last possible day.

My predictions:

new ipods, for sure.

MacBook Pro will get a quad core

iMac will get a quad core or an i7

Apple TV upgrade?

Apple employees get told nothing about upcoming product releases. The employee was speculating.

That said, every September has seen new iPods, it's not like it's a new occurrence.

Yup, nothing new. I think I have seen a couple sites that even have reported on this rumor back in April. It's iPod month!

Thats a lot of stuff to come out so soon right after 10.6 I think. I'm sure Apple will want to keep SL front and center on the homepage for a while.

Apple usually holds these events in September to release updated iPods.

It would be nice if they release the new touchpad device, but the predictions are no... :(

If we could confirm there will be an event on Sept 9 at this point....

This site would not exist!

Ever since September became the iPod month for Apple, I don't think there have ever been any Mac updates at those events. But last year the MacBooks were updated in October, so maybe that'll happen again. (Though I don't recall if that's an annual thing or not.)

We're not going to see more than iPod's at the event. At least, if Apple's past records are any indication. Apple likes to hold events around a group of products exclusively (unless it's MWSF or WWDC).

Last year it was:

MWSF 08 - Time Capsule, Apple TV, MacBook Air
March event - iPhone 3.0
WWDC - iPhone 3G
September - iPods
October - MacBooks

This year we've only had an iPhone software 3.0 event, and WWDC. Apple is relying less and less on events for products, and I think an iPod event is all we'll see this year.

That Apple employee was just being nice. Apple employees know nothing and are told not to say anything. It's clear that September event equates to iPod; but, retail employees are told not to say anything.

I think you mean iPhone 2.0 software.

But yeah, as everybody said, the September event is only for iPods.
I'm pretty sure there was an iPhone 3.0 event in March of 2009 showing some of the features like Push notifications and in app purchases. I remember seeing ESPN and a couple of ngmoco games.

Possibly, but wasn't that MacWorld?
Also, he said "last year", as in 2008.
