I can only hear my audio when i use the volume button on my macbook!

Help! My macbooks audio isn't working! All i can hear is the bleep when the volume is turned up or down, but no applications audio works - my itunes, vlc dont work, but my mac sounds work like starting up ones!

Can anybody help me!?!? Im a relatively new mac user so am fairly noob!

Make sure the settings allow for all of those applications to make noise, and their volume is turned up.

Out of curiosity does the same thing happen with headphones?

What happens if you watch a video in your web browser, like on Youtube? Does that work?

The volume on the apps are all turned up yes, and its the same with headphones in as well, and no it still doesn't work on youtube.
