If I hover my apple in ear headphones just below the left speaker on my MBP it goes into sleep mode. I imagine it must be a magnet issue or something that is causing the sleep activation. It happened a couple of times just removing my headphones and putting them down on the desk.. now I've narrowed it down and can replicate it.

Is this normal or should I be concerned my MBP has a fault?

This is normal. The MBP has a magnet in the screen and a sensor in the MBP body that senses when this magnet is close i.e. when the laptop is closed. This is the cue for the laptop to go to sleep.
Headphones have small magnets in them that will replicate this function.
