Hello. I've had a Mac for a little over a month and wanted to get a new eMail, so I used iChat to get a new @mac account. The problem is when I try to add this account to Mail, it says "Checking login" for a while and then says:

"Trying to log into the MobileMe IMAP server 'mail.mac.com' failed. Make sure the username and password you entered are correct, then click Continue. If the information isn't correct, you cannot receive your eMail."

I am positive my login information is correct, and I don't understand all the information I have to provide on the next page.

Do I need a MobileMe account? I do not have one. Could that be the problem? All help appreciated! :apple:

Yes, you need a mobileme account for anything relating to the @me stuff on your Mac. You can sign up for a free 6 months if you want, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you would use all the features that come with the $99 a year service. The price is more worth it when you have multiple Macs and/or a Mac and an iPhone. Otherwise, many of the basic services can be attained for free.

Otherwise, to use iChat, you can use a free AIM screen name which you can get by going to aim.com.

Also @mac.com was discontinued last year when Apple introduced MobileMe. If you go with the MobileMe service (I did .. I have an iMac, MBP, and an iPhone) then you'll get an @me.com account. I still have 1 @mac.com email address because I bought my MBP before the change and wish I could have gotten more .. but c'est la vie.
