I can't download apps to my iMac from the app store

I have a 2010 intel core imac and can't seem to download any apps from the app store site to my mac, they go to my apps folder but I just get the 'waiting' sign and nothing happens.

I have tried to download maveriks in the past and nothing happened now im trying an app called shutter count and again its just says waiting. Anyone know what to do?

resolved with Apple Care

I will just update my situation incase its of use to anyone else.

I tried various options with the apple care assistant and what seemed to be the issue was my own personal profile. We logged out and create a new Test profile for my computer and downloaded the new mavericks from there from the app store which sorted everything out. I logged back into my normal profile and all was sweet. I can now download from the app store so there was some issue with my computer profile and permissions- So reinstall if you fail everything else basically

£35 lighter but problem solved!
