I can't get music books or apps on my iP4S

I can get apps on my iP4S by going to the purchased tab and one by one saying install - but I can't get iTunes to sync apps, music, books or anything to my iP4S. I do exactly what I've done with the other iPhones I've had but it's not working and iTunes keeps hanging. My calendar, contacts, etc. are all there. But somehow iTunes doesn't seem to be working. I have the setting to sync with my iPhone on WiFi - but whether I plug it in or do it on WiFi - nothing happens. Help - suggestions???
