I can't send or receive pictures in iMessage anymore. Help?

Hi! When sending or receiving picture messages the image will appear for an instant and then disappear both on my phone and the recipients phone. Very frustrating. Please see attached image for an example of a conversation. I recently updated to iOS 8.4, but I think this problem may have predated the update. MMS is turned on in settings.

Please help!
