When 2.1 comes out, I don't care how good or long my backups have been, but I'm going to do a complete fresh restore of 2.1, just to make sure I have no underlying corrupt files from the buggy 2.0.2 setup that I (and many other people) have right now. I just think this is the best way to make sure there are no bugs that carry over from your 2.0.x backups etc., that 2.1 hopefully will fix.

Will you do the same?

This has been the case with me on ALL updates so far.

Backups are part of the reason why my phone will get what I call insomnia where all the third-party apps won't launch and the music is "missing."

Without restoring from backups it's fine.

How exactly would you go about doing a clean restore? I'm kind of confused.

Do you just mean that you're not going to restore the backup after you install 2.1?

I have been with every software version because I don't need the backups. I use MobileMe. So when I restore I resync MobileMe and my contacts, mail settings, calendar, and bookmarks almost instantly appear on my iPhone at that point. I don't even need MobileMe either. I could just sync it w/ iTunes and get all of that information put on my iPhone instantly. Anyways every software version from Apple for the iPhone has worked for me. I'm not worried wether I do a complete restore or use my backup.

Yes, no backup. No evidence of future software versions should exist and hopefully eliminating the problems from them.

In that case, I think I might try it. I mean, most of my stuff is backed up on my Mac already anyways. All I will have to do is sync, then maybe just change a few settings around.

No big deal to ensure that I will *hopefully* not have any headaches with 2.1

Right, this OP and I really have no evidence that previous versions have any effect, but it's all in an effort to make sure it does not have any effect and peace of mind. Also, if there are any problems you know it's not the backup fault or anything, you will immediately know that 2.1 has issues at that point.

Hah! Good additions. Given the problems when 2.0 came out (overwhelmed servers, etc.) I plan on waiting a few days before I try and update.

I have always used set up as a new iphone. It takes less time to do that and there are never any issues. Plus all of the cool kids are doing it. Its OK if ou are scared, theres nothing to be ashamed about.

I'm not goon to bother and just upgrade. Ive never had any problem upgrade installing my Mac or iPhone 3G so far so why bther now? I've only got small niggling problems that have apparently been there since 1.0. Plus, I don't want to lose my txt message.

heres an idea: why not just title the thread "Will you do a clean restore of 2.1 when it comes out?"
