You might have heard a variation of this a million times, but I'm out of my wits. So here goes.

A week ago, I dropped my phone4 in the kitchen from the kitchen counter top (not that high right?) and though it didn't land on carpet, it landed face down on the floor.

It was off when I picked it up and I couldn't turn it back on! I panicked. Later, it could only turn on when its plugged in.

I did reset ie push the top button and the home button MANY times, and since then, it's acting whacked. On some days, it acts normal the whole day. On other days, it turns off randomly up to 20 times a day! I have to push the top button and the home button to get it on. It powers up for a second, and it turns off again. I can't use my phone basically unless its plugged in.

Here's the thing. Its no longer under warranty and I can't afford to get a new phone. Is there no hope? Is there anything I can do? I suspect its a battery problem, since it works fine when its plugged in. But the thing that puzzles me is the phone doesn't look damaged. I did not crack anything, I've seen photos of dropped iphones online that look like they were steamrolled or run over by a truck the glass's completely shattered and those phones work fine!!!

How could mine have zero cosmetic symptoms but is totally whacked?

I'm at my wit's ends. I use my phone a lot. This is causing me much distress. :(:( If there was a teary face, I'd use it.

I only started using this phone early last year (so its only used for a year), and the iphone 4 before this I used only a year as well was robbed from me when I went to China for a vacation (don't go there). I feel very very very very upset.

Apple will exchange it OoW for $149

Regardless of where it's bought?

$149 is still too steep. Is there something I can do?

----------

The iphone 4 is now given free in the US with a contract. I can't bring myself to have to pay for it. I can't sign a contract now as well, as I'm due to leave the country on an exchange program in six months.

Open the back up and check the battery cable.

New batteries are $25 from ifixit, including the tool to open the back.

What should the battery cable look like? What should I look out for?

I don't know anything about this. Oh dear.

----------

Can I do a restore with Itunes? Would that work?

A restore won't fix your hardware problems. You can try it, it cannot hurt.

You will want to verify that the battery cable is still firmly attached to the main board and that the battery is not damaged.

If the battery is damaged, where do I go buy a battery on its own??

It's not free, it's subsidized by the phone company. You're paying for it over the two year contract.

You could try to find a local repair shop, they might find something loose and be able to fix it.

Too steep for a "new" i4?

I already stated clearly that the iphone 4 is given out free with contract signed, so I can't bring myself to pay for one. And I stated why I cannot sign any contract now for either the 4 or the 5 because I'm leaving the country.

I know its not technically free but it is on practice free. Everyone needs a mobile plan.

Thanks. I'll do that after trying ifixit.

I simply asked how is $149 too steep for a "new" iphone 4. PLUS it's free with a 2 year contract. The reason I wrote "new" iPhone is because it would be a white box refurb and NOT a new phone.

(I'm not even sure if Apple does this)
They absolutely do! One of the reasons I love owning an iPhone. I took a water damaged yet still working 3gs in for OOW replacement when I heard they would not be selling them anymore (3gs OOW replacement was $99 at the time). They didn't have any 3gs's so I walked out the door with a "new" i4 for $149. I actually really wanted a 3gs to add to the collection but was very happy to spend the extra $50 for the i4.
