Its because you can still talk to siri and people while wearing the earpods. Even though you listen to their voice through the earpods your voice out going will use the mic that is located on the ipod. Just a cool little tid bit of info. So you wont have to take of your earpods to talk to people or siri.:D

Sure, but the in-line controls are also lost. That's pretty unfortunate. I was looking forward to finally having those included with an iPod so I could adjust things without having to take the iPod out of my pocket or turn on the screen. If the EarPods sound good enough I'll probably end up caving and buying a pair with the in-line remote and microphone.

i hear you on that. They do sound a lot more clear in the mids and highs and more bass heavy as well.
 
no, it's not. iphone 5 has microphone on the back too. it is called 'marketing gimmick'. apple has used this strategy for a long time. nowadays, it seems more bad.
