I finally realized why the opening at the bottom of a case is good

My cases have always had an opening at the bottom, i.e. the lip never went all the way around. But this year for my 12P got a Smartish case. I thought I'd like the lip going all the way around. Problem is I can't tell at a glance, when it's on its back, which way is up. So I pick it up the wrong way a fair bit of time.

Yeah. I haven't had any issues with functionality in this regard, i.e. every time I swipe up, it works. But I agree with you that it doesn't feel as good with the lip there.

You can’t tell if you are looking at the screen or the bottom of the phone?

I always put my phone down with the screen up, partially bc on my desk it's on a wireless charger. And my case has case-colored buttons so it's not easy to tell at a glance.

I think I might have misunderstood what you were saying.
When you say you "pick it up wrong" did you mean upside down? In which case I understand your issue.

Yes exactly I pick it up with the notch at the bottom.

I love the open bottom, since swiping up is easy. Anyone know of a slim case with an open bottom (other than Pitaka- not protective enough)?

I plan to use glass screen protector so that it raises up the screen, swiping up should be easier.

The clear case has an opening on the bottom, but I don't really like the looks of those white magnets being visible. They should have tinted them with each phone color.

Edit: nevermind, I just re-read your post and see your problem.

This problem could be fixed with an always-on display in the future. So, fingers crossed.

I never have problem sliding up with the lip on the case. The phone is smart enough.

It's more-so the feeling of your thumb getting caught on the lip every time.
