i got a ibook g4 for xmas and im wondering if i have a cd burner??

i dont think i have a cd burner..i put in a blank dics and it just gets spit out.
im also having a problem with myspace...i cant update my profile..and i cant see any pics on my top friend just the names...i have no idea what to do...any suggestions???? thanks
 
Utilities - system profiler - ata
OR Disk utility should tell you.

Or list your specs and someone might be able to look it up for you...
Most likely you will have a CD burner though
 
What model of iBook is this?

1.33, 1.2ghz, 1.42?

All iBooks G4 had a cd burner. It is not that big a deal if it is broken. Just put in a dual layer dvd/cd burner when you get it fixed... upgrade it.

Sounds like yours isn't working...

All iBook G4's have cd burners.

Ibook g3 did not all have cd burners.

How did you get an iBook G4 without a cd burner?

What does it say in system preferences?

i called where i bought the computer, they said its just a cd rom? not a burner.
i hate this computer! i cant update anything becasue my mac is 1.3.9 and i dont really know my way around computer to beging with. any help would be awesome!!!

That is nuts. The only thing I can think of is you have a G3 iBOOK NOT A G4 iBOOK.

G3 iBooks, the older ones, came sometimes came with cd roms only.

If you have a CD rom only in a G4 iBook, I am completely confused. That would be a very strange situation; I don't even think they made cd roms in that configuration that would fit inside a G4 iBook.

Does it pop out of the side (tray load cd rom) or is it a slot load (you just push it into the side)?

What does your iBook look like? Do you have a white machine or is it a clamshell with colored plastic?

I have no idea why firefox would help her. She meant to say she is on Panther 10.3.9 and that comes with Safari.

You need to tell us what it says on your Mac when you open the top left Apple icon and go to "about this Mac".

you must be right, because the OP said 1.3.9 was installed. if im not mistaking i think the mac os was way past 1.3.9 when the ibook g4's came out. im pretty sure they shipped with panther
 
All iBook G4's came with a CD burner and DVD player.
maybe its broken, so call up the person you bought it off and complain.

My G4 iBook (800mhz) came pre-installed with something like 10.3.2 when I bought it 12/03. (she meant 10.3.9, not 1.3.9)
 
Samantha, Are you sure you didn't put in a blank DVD? It just might spit that out.

Ann, About Firefox; I have a photo Gallery at a friends site and I have to use Firefox to manage my pix there. I use Safari for everything else.
 
Actually if she has an Education model, it's absolutely possible it had a CD-ROM drive. A good friend of mine on the forums had an 800MHz iBook G4 that only had a CD-ROM drive; he bought it refurbished from the Apple Store.

But it had to be a G3 800mhz ibook, not a G4.
 
Nope, it was definitely a G4. It was the Education model only sold to schools originally. It was offered with a CD-ROM drive, and then sold through the Apple Refurb store.

EDIT: Here is one right here, though it isn't 800MHz. CD-ROM G4

Sounds like you just have a bad cd drive. These are not that expensive nowadays and very easy to replace in your G4 iBook.

I would ask whomever you bought this from if they will put a newer UJ 846 Matashita dvd burner in your machine. Also you do not have enough ram.

The older cd/dvd drives get finicky over time. That is probably what the problem is.

You need them to put in a new dvd/cd burner (don't bother with the stock cd burner/dvd rom drive) and you need more ram. Get one PC 2700 200 pin stick of one gig of ram.

You have a pretty good machine. just get a working dvd burner and more ram and you should run Tiger very well.

P.S. I used to own that machine and i put a dvd/cd burner in it. Worked great. Don't let them rip you off. You can get a burner for like 70 bucks now or LESS. But they owe you so it should cost even less than that. Make sure you get a new one.
 
You told "blank DVD"... remember it must be a blank cd, not dvd. But upgrading to a super drive will be better.

Also, phanter is very old, you can't even use firefox 3 on that, and your ibook can run leopard very fine, just by adding 1 GB more ram (mine is the same 1 GHZ, plus 1,25 GB ram and it runs perfectly leopard, office 2008, and iLife 06)
