Pulled my mid 2010 out of its slumber to put it to use

Sigh. I'm assuming Apple won't want to know about it as it's vintage...

Don’t worry, it’s just a swollen battery. Replace the battery is a very quick repair, upgrade the RAM to 8GB, lob in an SSD, and you’re laughing.

I agree. Did this same thing to my 2010 MBP, more RAM, SSD, and it flies. Runs all of today's software perfectly fine. Do it!

Hi Hater!
I see that you are in the UK so I have some great sites for you. The Apple Store recommended CRUCIAL to me for RAM upgrades and SSD. Their service was FANTASTIC and I believe that there's even a test for your MacBook on their site to confirm RAM etc. The fact that the Apple sTore recommends this place is commendable

And for batteries, I'm guessing that this Duracel is of a decent quality at £66 along with iFixit...

iFixit

Here's how to fit it. Took me 10 minutes. These older MacBook have the engineering of a beautiful German car :) They are super!

And the battery

I've learnt the hard way by buying a cheap SLODA battery from Amazon and it is TERRIBLE! Only lasted 12 months!

Cheers Paul :)

I've decided to not continue with this machine though, I'll remove the battery and take it to the Apple store for proper disposal.

The laptop will live with my my laptop hoard.

It's not a machine I use much, only very infrequently... I have a collection of these old things, so it's just to sit in with the rest of my old machines...

Owwww that's a shame as they are nice machines.
My local Waitrose supermarket disposed of my old Apple battery for me :) After a little research, I believe these MacBooks had Samsung batteries. DAMN GOOD as mine lasted 6.5 years with 2500 charge cycles!
