Sorry for the rant. Just gotta let out some steam on how ****ing ****** that dumb Android is and how ****ed up crappy AirPlay 1.0 works.

Why can’t you just ****ing bitstream with an Apple product… I hate Android so much but it still works better than AppleTV or AirPlay 😭

When you calm down you might want to post what you problems are. Also please post what troubling shooting you have tried. This will save a lot of time and guessing. Also a few minutes doing searches on your problems may help out. Their are few problems that haven't been experienced before with solutions.

I have a Shield 2017, Onn Pro 4k, AppleTV 4k 2nd Gen, Zidoo z9x, and Firestick Max. They all have their pros and cons.

I'm okay with no bitstreaming on the AppleTV as long as the file I'm viewing does not have metadata for spatial audio; otherwise, I use my Shield or Zidoo.

Thank you very much for your considerate answer but the solution I’m hoping to find is a device that doesn’t run Android so it doesn’t freeze all the time and I don’t need to have anything Google in my house.
I need to be able to switch HDMI inputs on receivers without the Android crashing and to pause/play videos without the Android crashing and I want all advertisements for services I don’t subscribe to to disappear and I think the device is ugly which could be improved a lot. It also has to “just work”. Needing reboots every week and needing to kill apps every day is unacceptable.

First sentence was “sorry for the rant”. After that came “Just gotta let out some steam“ indicating I don’t want a solution other than to throw away the ****** Android out of the window but if you still want to help out, I need the above issues fixed first.

Thank you!

Maybe if you sell them all you can get a tiny Windows pc? Might need a keyboard instead remote control but one of those small Logitech ones might look better than a bunch of remotes. You’d also be able to play high quality audio without needing Android in your network.

I've done the HTPC route and it's just not as convenient or stable in my opinion.

My Zidoo can play all of the video (HD and UHD) and audio files (flac, MP3, DSD) from my NAS with the app from my iPad.

I have no issues with devices using Android OS or AndroidTV OS.

Sometimes I miss the days where I had a Windows pc near the tv. Everything high quality and so reliable and quick but support stops this year. Apple will never accomodate audiophiles and Google hates us all.

I think selling my tv and getting a HDMI 2.1 model is the only solution that could work in my situation. Then Debian can serve the files to the tv and the tv can send the audio to the receiver. No dumb Android or handicapped AppleTV needed and 100% of the quality, right?

I have a Shield Pro 2017 upstairs and a Shield Pro 2019 in the theater. The 2019 never has problems and just works.

The 2017 freezes occasionally and I have to pull the power to restore it. I'm going to replace it with a 2019 or newer at some point, only because the new TV upstairs supports DV & HDR10, but the Shield 2017 doesn't support DV.

He dislikes the shield environment but uses it begrudgingly because Apple does not allow bitstreaming. I mean it’s literally as clear as day what the issue is.

OP I feel your pain. I use plex via my Xbox to see that lovely DTS HD or Atmos light up on my receiver.
