I needed to add a keyboard shortcut to an app. Shouldn't be that hard, I've done it tons of times before. But thanks to Apple, it is now.

I open system settings, Where is keyboard? Screw this, let's just type it in. Nope, the search bar isn't active by default for some reason. Okay, CMD-F and I type in keyboard. I click on "Keyboard Shortcuts", wrong choice. You see, for reasons I cannot understand, the search results list is scrolled to the bottom, and I clicked on the keyboard shortcut entry for dictation. Why, Apple?! I have to scroll up first and then click "Keyboard". On an M4 Pro, it takes 2 seconds for this keyboard settings panel to load. Ridiculous.

Okay, now where's my shortcuts tab? Wait, there aren't ANY tabs. Okay, now I have to scan through each item to find it. On, it's a button. Why is it a button? What action am I preforming, opening a menu? Really Apple? This menu takes like a half second to load. Which is strange, it has a bunch of icons yet it loads faster than the initial keyboard panel? What's going on?

Click on App Shortcuts on the left, and click the + to add an app. At least I can still type-to-complete in the app list. Once I've entered in the Menu title, I switch back to the app in question to ensure I've typed it correctly. I've made a mistake, I need to capitalize something.

Well, thanks to Apple, I won't be able to correct it. You see, after I tab back into Settings, any keyboard actions get consumed by the shortcut entry box. I cannot use the arrow keys to go back and correct my mistake in the Menu title. I use my mouse to put the cursor in the correct position, and I cannot delete, because the backspace is consumed by the shortcut entry box. I cannot even use tab to change the input box, again it is consumed. Strangely, I can still type letters into the menu title box, so it's in a partially-selected state. The only solution is to exit out and re-do everything from scratch.

What a weird, buggy, bad UX mess of a dump Apple made.

I just tried this with zero issues. When I open Settings I hit the letter K (without moving the cursor to the Settings search box) and it jumps right to Keyboard settings.

I didn't know this. There's no way to know these things, Apple decided to change the old behavior (search bar is focused) and now expects us to know, with no indication from the UI, that we can type-to-complete. I suppose it's nice that someone put the effort in to make that work, but I fail to see how that's better than having the search field focused by default. You can't type to complete Time Machine, for instance, because that's not a top level item (again, why? It's one of the best macOS features and one of the most commonly used preference items).

Anyways, even your example isn't really complete, as soon as you begin typing "shorT" it switches to the trackpad panel. Or if the user just types "shortcuts" they get Screen Saver and then Users.
