I needed to add a keyboard shortcut to an app. Shouldn't be that hard, I've done it tons of times before. But thanks to Apple, it is now.
I open system settings, Where is keyboard? Screw this, let's just type it in. Nope, the search bar isn't active by default for some reason. Okay, CMD-F and I type in keyboard. I click on "Keyboard Shortcuts", wrong choice. You see, for reasons I cannot understand, the search results list is scrolled to the bottom, and I clicked on the keyboard shortcut entry for dictation. Why, Apple?! I have to scroll up first and then click "Keyboard". On an M4 Pro, it takes 2 seconds for this keyboard settings panel to load. Ridiculous.
Okay, now where's my shortcuts tab? Wait, there aren't ANY tabs. Okay, now I have to scan through each item to find it. On, it's a button. Why is it a button? What action am I preforming, opening a menu? Really Apple? This menu takes like a half second to load. Which is strange, it has a bunch of icons yet it loads faster than the initial keyboard panel? What's going on?
Click on App Shortcuts on the left, and click the + to add an app. At least I can still type-to-complete in the app list. Once I've entered in the Menu title, I switch back to the app in question to ensure I've typed it correctly. I've made a mistake, I need to capitalize something.
Well, thanks to Apple, I won't be able to correct it. You see, after I tab back into Settings, any keyboard actions get consumed by the shortcut entry box. I cannot use the arrow keys to go back and correct my mistake in the Menu title. I use my mouse to put the cursor in the correct position, and I cannot delete, because the backspace is consumed by the shortcut entry box. I cannot even use tab to change the input box, again it is consumed. Strangely, I can still type letters into the menu title box, so it's in a partially-selected state. The only solution is to exit out and re-do everything from scratch.
What a weird, buggy, bad UX mess of a dump Apple made.
