The back up keeps failing. I have around 250GB of storage on my phone. Any suggestions to help it successfully complete?

Does it need to be completed in one shot? Or can 75% back up now and the rest finishes later?

The problem isn’t your storage quota but more likely your connection to iCloud. If enough missed bits get transmitted, the checksums don’t add up and the backup is terminated. It has happened to me several times.
It never happened when I initiated an iCloud back up on off hours, only during busy times.

What is the error message you are getting? Unless it is telling you that it’s running out of space, then I‘m not sure why you are assuming that space is the problem.

iPhone backups to iCloud made more sense back in the day of 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB iPhones, but now with the 256, 512 and 1 TB options, it’s not really practical because it takes soooo long

It’s really just the restore that takes a long time. The backups are incremental, so each night it will only back up the data that has changed. Unless you add half a terabyte to your phone in one day then the backup times should be reasonable.

Of course when you get a new phone and have to restore all of that data at once you can definitely have issues. I think this is one reason why the phone to phone transfer is a thing - you can avoid relying on the internet connection speed and the iCloud server speed for the restore.

But despite the drawbacks there aren’t a lot of other good options to back up the phone. At this point, for my own personal use, I’m 100% iOS. I use my phone and my iPad for everything. I don’t even have a computer that I could backup my devices to, even if I wanted to. So iCloud is the best (and only) option for me.

If the backups are incremental, then why do I need to complete it in one sitting?

I don’t know for sure whether you do or not. I don’t think apple has really published details about exactly how the backup process works. I think there is a good chance that the data that has been transferred before the backup failed will be retained and when you try to backup again it will pick up where it left off. But it’s also possible that any failure during the backup processes results in any data that has been transferred being purged and it will need to start over next time.

They’re incremental in the sense that only new data is backed up when compared to the original backup, but a master backup has to be uploaded first. It is the most painful one.

17 hours later, still backing up.

Is it possible to do the following:

How do I upload all of my photos to iCloud separately? And then for an iPhone backup do only contacts and messages and then I transfer my photos later on.

Turn on iCloud Photo Library. The photos won’t be included in the backup in this case and instead will backup on its on (You can also do this messages). You can also go in and choose what gets backed up. Maybe slowly turn certain apps off and on until you have everything.

Now I can't disable iCloud photos without deleting all of the photos on my phone. But my full photo library hasn't finished being uploaded to iCloud yet...
