I have the first version of the MBP i7 17" laptop, curious if the new version of the mac mini would be faster than my computer generally?

according to geekbench, if you have the 2.67 GHz model, your computer scores a 5569.

the newest mac mini scores a 8573 on the sever model, and a 6472 on the high-end non-server model. so based on whatever geekbench uses, the new mac minis are more powerful.

According to Geekbench x64, I pull 11,000 on my 15" MBP 2.2Ghz with 8GB RAM.

For general computing, no, the mini will not be any faster. A faster CPU does not translate into a faster overall computer. It only helps in benchmarks and CPU heavy apps.

While that's true, what proof do you have that the mini would not be faster? The server also uses 7200rpm drives

After reviewing the stats, I can guarantee that the Mini will have performance gains over the 17".
If you're pitting a 1st-gen i7 against a Sandy Bridge i5, the i5 is almost guaranteed to outperform the former.
Graphics performance will be around the same; only when using the IGP will you see a big boost.
