I bought an iPhone 4 it came with 4.0.2 and it was too late to downgrade to 4.0.1 so I could jailbreak...the dev team blog is saying not to upgrade to 4.1, but that doesn't apply to me, correct? Since I'm not jailbroken now it shouldn't matter, right? Thanks for any help!

I would get TinyUmbrella and save your SHSH just in case you ever need to go back to 4.02. It's good to at least have the option.

Don't upgrade if you ever want to unlock your phone, as 4.1 has a baseband update. If you don't care about unlocking (resale value etc) then upgrade away

Not only can you upgrade without updating your baseband, but I was under the impression from notcom's statements that it's also possible to downgrade the baseband while 4.0.2 is still being signed...Can someone verify this?

Actually it is...read his firmware blog after he explains on how to go to 4.1 without updating Baseband, then he explains it. It sounds like it won't be this way after Apple stops signing 4.0.2 software.

Quick question: can anyone think of a reason not to upgrade the baseband apart from being able to unlock it? I mean, since I'm planning on staying with ATT for a while, there's no reason to not update baseband.

I think you read it wrong.
Yes, you can upgrade your firmware without updating your baseband version.
No you cant downgrade your baseband once it has been updated.

Unless you want to sell it unlocked next June-July and be able to move it faster and for more money.

Am I reading this wrong? This quote is directly from his mainpage, near the bottom:

"I have heard a few folks voice concerns about how they can downgrade their 2.x baseband to 1.59.00 on iPhone4. Here are the basic steps:

Close TinyUmbrella (if open)
Close iTunes (if open)
Remove ALL lines in your hosts file that contain gs.apple.com
Windows: Start -> cmd -> ipconfig /flushdns
Mac: Terminal -> dscacheutil -flushcache
Start iTunes
Restore (NOT UPDATE) Stock 4.0.2 iPhone 4 - 4.0.2 Download
Note that this will only work while Apple is signing 4.0.2 SHSH requests. This is due to the way Apple now updates/restores Baseband Firmware for the iPhone 4 different from the way it did to prior devices. Lucky us..."

This seems to tell me that you can still downgrade baseband if you've already updated it...Right?

Oh I see.
Its a Yes and a No though.
As soon as Apple stops signing official 4.0.2 even with SHSH's saved you will not be able to downgrade the baseband.
Thats only for that small window between firmware releases that Apple still signs 4.0.2 for a day or 2 even though 4.1 is out.
