I have a 5 year old macbook pro. Anyway to hook up audio and video to receiver?

you need to be more clear as to what exactly you're trying to do here.
You want to output the video w/ sound to an external monitor or TV?
What do you mean by receiver?

I Think He wants to use it as a HTPC. Hooking audio and video to the AV Receiver which goes to the TV/Projector.
It depends on your receiver, but my Yamaha wouldn't combine a digital input and a separate HDMI input.
What I did with my machine (same as yours) was to connect the DVI-HDMI cable to the TV then a TOSLINK cable to the receiver. Pretty much self-explanatory from there.

from the MBP to the AV Receiver, then use the receiver to go out to the tv, and he will have upscale and surround sound!
