I tried it at 5 am in the morning and it seems better than when compared to 7 PM. It also seems to be worse for users in crowded areas like NYC.

It's called cell breathing. Very common in heavy usage areas. Google it.

[I've given longer explanations on here, but it seems like people keep coming to this "discovery," without paying attention, so I give up.]

I think this is often the case, but I think sometimes 3G is just messed up....I can't get it to load pages at all, turn airplane mode on and off...then miraculously it works fine.....that's annoying!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5C1 Safari/525.20)

You are ABSOLUTELY correct. I just moved from fort lauderdale fl to new York city today actually. I got 1.5Mbps in florida... Here I can barely get 0.5

Same phone.

And it's all I've got for Internet right now! (wish I had netshare haha)

3g in shreveport is very consistent and good. But we only have 200,000 people and i would bet that only a select few have at&t 3g phones. So no clutter here.

hmm, well i wonder what at&t 3G is like here in southeast virginia.
hampton roads, and mostly virginia beach is doused is 3G.
and the biggest city here at a little over 500,000.
so i wonder how bad bandwidth usage is here.

I hear you. It's not uncommon to find three new threads about the exact same topic pop up in a day in the Mac Rumors forum. ;)

I must nitpick at your thread title, as it seems to imply 3G reception or signal strength is in direct correlation to data throughput.

Signal strength is not the same thing as bandwidth ;)
