but I have a crappy 19" conia lcd and an equally crappy, though large, ex-corp analogue tv. It would be good to watch movies from my MBP on the big tele (analog) but would be happy enough getting them on the conia. Can I get audio/vga from the one cable these days? I've heard of Display Port but am confused if my MBP came out before that was incorporated. Any help or advice greatly appreciated...

You have Mini DisplayPort. You want a Mini DisplayPort to VGA cable and use the headphones port for audio.
