You have a 2G iPod Touch. Those can use a microphone attached to the earphones, like the ones Apple sells and come with iPhones. To use the microphone, just plug it in and go to any app that uses a microphone. Then make noise into the microphone on the earphones.

That's what I tried to do except it didn't sense any mic. I tried the Bose earphone with mic.

Just a quick clarification here: Does your iPod have buttons on the side to change the volume?

No it doesn't

Then you have a 1G iPod Touch. Those cannot use headphone based microphones.
