How much can I sell my m1 for ?
I could also consider a mbp at that price I suppose but I hate the ergonomics
Tbh at some point I feel my m1 won't be worth much
What would you do?

my plan was to wait for the 2026 refresh to either get a macbook pro if they are much thinner and more comfortable for the wrists, or get a 120hz mba hopefully

but in the meantime, if i don't get a m3 , i might actually lose money I figure, no ? is my calculus wrong ?

how would you lose money by spending money?
i realize the wording was wrong. what i meant was, if by that time my m1 isn't worth much or anything, while the m3 could be sold at a decent price...

see it that way ; if I can sell the m3 for 700 bucks in 1/2 years, and sell my m1 for 600 now (idk if that's the case), it'd mean i only lose 300 bucks, whilst enjoying a refreshed device

if in 2 years the m1 isn't worth more than 250 bucks, I would effectively be losing money

1050 euro for that configuration new is not bad at all

It depends on your use case ...

I do mostly light stuff and going from m1 to m3 did not make a big difference to me, I went mostly for the 16gb of RAM vs 8

honestly, I would not spend all that money now just to "save" by getting higher resale values on the m1 now and the m3 later ..

the cheapest device you can get is the one you already paid for

if it still works for you, just keep it

my logic makes sense though doesn't it ? or is it flawed

yeah i figure it's not much different. i'd rather have a device that can run 4k240 hdr, but only the m4 can

av1 hardware support

more ram , slightly bigger screen (although id' much rather 15"), better screen, no pwm,

for my use case it doesnt matter, i'm fine with m1 and probably still will be for the upcoming years. the only "real" problems are 16 vs 24gb, and pwm

ergonomics are much better on m1

well, I never made money by buying tech stuff .. apple did

but I always found (seemingly) very good excuses to do so anyway! ;)

It seems to me you are looking for one, too ..?

If you can sell your M1 for close to what you would spend on the new M3, why not, go for it

that's what im trying to figure, the deal will probably end soon, but i'd like to know how much i can realistically put my m1 for ;p

yes, I understand

sorry, I cannot tell you how much your used m1 is worth

but surely someone here can

did you take a look at your national eBay / reseller sites to get an idea?

I just saw one selling for 799 euro (on eBay Italy)

but then again, if I can get that m3 configuration new for a little over 1000, why would I pay 800 for a used mb that launched in 2020?

I don’t know how much used M1 costs now but consider this in your calculus: how much would it cost if your M1 screen or battery breaks? Probably the same or more than the cost of used M1.

If you trade in for a new M3, at least you’ll get a few years of piece of mind with the warranty and new specs.

i'd use apple care either way...

I have a MBA M1 16/1Tb myself. It works flawlessly. I see absolutely no point in upgrading to M3, so just do it if the new machine is cool and you like to play around with new things. Those are valid reasons. Otherwise, it makes very little sense to me.

I went from an M1/16 8/8 to an M4/24 10/10. The benchmarks show the jump is huge. It DOES feel quicker for sure, but day to day stuff it's not huge. Where I notice the difference is that I've got more RAM to keep more apps open before going to swap, and the battery is fresh, those are the two most noticeable things.

Would I have upgraded to an M3 for 150 Euros? Yeah probably. Just don't expect it to be leaps and bounds faster, benchmarks aside.

A quick look at EBay's USA site leaves me thinking you're a bit optimistic on what you could sell your M1 for.....and a bit bit pessimistic on what it might be worth in 2 years.

right, i thought I might be . eh, you think people would pay more than that in 2 years ?

In my quick look on ebay I saw intel MBAs listed for more than you mentioned...I suspect that the M1 will continue to attract buyers who feel that the minimum spec they need is something in the M series.

i'm not surprised they're listed for more, the question is, do they sell . haha
