I believe to have found the reason that people who are new to the Mac world call our computers MAC.

Scroll down to where it says included software. The whole thing stems from web designers of the late 90s and 00s typing the word Mac as they do PC; thinking that the titles followed the same rules!

Now, how should we go about fixing this problem?

I think if you spent less time thinking about it it wouldnt bother you. Mac, MAC, mac, mAC, pretty much gets the point across to me.

I gave that one up a long time ago. I don't even much worry about those that use Mac as a company name, rather than a brand. I once replied to a query about my MacBook ("what kind of computer is that?") by responding that it's an Apple. I got a dumb stare and a response of, "are they making computers now? I thought Apple only made iPods (or 'I-pods')."

The wasteland is watching you. :p
