You could simply clone the drive with Carbon Copy Cloner.
You can use version 3.5.1 ($40) or 3.4.7 (free, and works well on OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8).
well i really just want the installer since i have a 4gb flash drive, but not an 8gb. mac was pre loaded with lion so i can't just go to the app store and re download it
The Lion installer is slightly too big for a 4Gb flash drive. You will need to buy an 8Gb flash drive if you want a flash drive with the installer on it.

Your format the USB flash storage thumb drive properly*, then use CarbonCopyCloner (version 3.4.7 is still free) to clone the the disk image (Restore from disk image selected as Source) to the USB flash storage thumb drive (select that drive as Target).
is there a way i can just get the installer though if the mac is pre loaded with lion and i never purchased lion?
