I have old drive from replaced 1tb iMac... HELP!

Apple has just replaced my 1TB seagate barracuda 7200.12 and as a courtesy they let me have the old drive back since all my data was on it. I have read the problem is caused by a firmware issue. My question is...

If i buy a HD enclosure, is it possible for me to flash the firmware and get my data back?
