thanks, i downloaded the 6.2.8 version and installed it (installation was successful) but in the application folder is only the non working version to be found(?)
Any suggestions..?
Have you tried restarting your Mac?
If that does not work then I think you have something else going on with your Mac since you can not even install the OS 10.8.5 Combo Updater.
Maybe try running Disk Utility and repairing Permissions and Verifying Disk.

i did all you suggested but notthing worked... when i click on the installer combo i get the message

"OS X Update can't be installed on this disk. The contens of this disk can't be changed"

does this have to do with the inability of me not being able to erase safari..?any tips on what i should try..?

No experience with this kind of problem.
Hopefully you have good backups. My reaction would be to erase and restore from backups, but then I keep daily Time Machine and Carbon Copy Cloner backups. Maybe someone else has some ideas.

Likely that the later security updates don't allow the combo updater to install (as the system is a step or two newer build with the security updates installed)
You COULD just reinstall Mountain Lion. If you don't already have the installer, you can download it again through the App Store. Make a bootable flash drive, or a spare partition on an external drive. Google for the method, it's easy enough to make the bootable installer. Or just get the good DiskMakerX utility. Makes the job simple.

ok, i managed to get rid of the non working safari version via mac cleaner and have installedthe version of safari i had before but that won't open! the icon shows briefly in thr bar the closes again...

any suggestions..?

Time to reinstall OS X.
Reboot, holding Command + R
Follow the steps to reinstall OS X.
Takes most of an hour, because that install downloads all the system files, then installs them.
Or, (much simpler and quicker) if you have the 10.8.5 full install saved, and already created a bootable OS X installer drive, use that.

can you access the safari from finder?
install 'himmel bar' it will show all the apps

Would it be possible to restore just the application folder from a time machine backup do you think that would give me back the working version of safari..?
