I've never own a pmp before, but now that iPods have come so far in the past ~6 years I decided it was finally time to buy one, they've just gotten so awesome that I can no longer justify continuing to use my mp3 cd player. But in order to use my forthcoming iPod I had to upgrade from OS 10.3 panther to OS 10.5 leopard.
So I went from having all old toys to having the newest toys on the block! And they are AWESOME!!! Leopard has 2 hugely major problems - messed up airport/wifi, and the terrible stacks that replace, instead of being in addition to, the old highly functional dock folders. But other than those 2 things, leopard is the shiz!
- Safari now has moveable tabs that let you rearrange tabs in a single safari window, and even better safari tabs can actually be dragged out of a safari window to create their own new safari window which can then be used to spawn new tabs organized in its own safari window. And tabs can even be dragged back and forth between different safari windows!
- Quicklook is amazing! Just select any file in the finder then hit space bar and you'll see/hear/view that document almost instantly without having to open up any viewer program! Highlight a text file + spacebar = view entire text document. html file + spacebar = view rendered webpage that you can scroll through. mp3 file + spacebar = hear the mp3 song. avi file + space = watch video. highlight several picture and you can view them as a full screen slideshow or a contact sheet.
- notes integrated into Mail! This is so awesomely useful! So many times I just want to jot down some quick info to keep around for later, and I wind up making text documents that end up scattered around my desktop and other places. But now I can just write all these notes into the notes section of mail where they'll be collected and organized! So cool!
- and much much more
As for my iPod Classic, what can I say? It's physically tiny, but has an 80 GB capacity, it sounds great, will hold tons of music and videos, plays games, is bright and fun to use. The iPod classic is such a mature and refined product now that it's form and function are almost perfect. The only downside is that it doesn't play many video formats and you're forced to use itunes, which I personally don't like very much.
Anyway, I'm just gushing over my super cool new toys and I'm blown away at ho generally fun and useful they are. So I wanted to share my feelings with my fellow Apple geeks and give you a report from the field from an actual user.
If you're thinking about getting some new Apple products right now I'd suggest that as long as you don't mind dealing with a couple of new-product problems, then now is a great time to jump in!
