I just got the most bizarre phone call

So I get a call from a number I know (It's a mobile, but not a "smart" phone of any kind) and what I hear on the other end is them checking their voicemail! How is this even possible?!

Perhaps while hitting buttons to listen to their voicemail, they accidentially conferenced you in.
