I would have been much better off buying a USB3.0 to GB Enet adapter for a little less $. For example: www.amazon.com/Gigabit-Ethernet-Network-Indicator-Warranty/dp/B00A0ABQLM/
Whenever I'm at home, my rMBP is "docked" to a USB 3.0 hub, so this is just one more thing to get plugged in over there, rather than another dongle sticking out of the other side of my rMBP.
I was starting to feel a little envy of the upcoming 2013 models which will probably have 802.11ac wifi - until I realized that I will probably be able to get a cheap adapter to plug into the USB hub and possibly ditch the Enet wire altogether. That's when I had the revelation that I was doing the GB Enet connection the wrong way.
