Upgraded today from a 7 year old iPhone Xs Max to a black iPhone 17 base model. My first impressions were that it is faster, has a better screen, better cameras, a little smaller and a little lighter. Also the upgrade fixed an app that was acting wonky sometimes. It is a nice upgrade from a 7 year old iPhone. Overall I like the iPhone 17 and hopefully it gives me 7 years of flawless use(just like the iPhone Xs Max did).

That was a long road for the old one. I have the new-tech bug deep within, I couldn't imagine going that long with the same phone. Enjoy the 17!

i think 7 years should be ok.
it really depends on what apple does after it eventually gets its act together about how neo-Siri is supposed to be integrated into the OS. iPhone 17 base model has 8GB RAM which, pre-LLM, would be enough for a 5 to 7 year run.
with the large language model age we are in, im not so sure. if apple does what it has stated as its goal (rebuilding Siri with LLM capability, and integration as a part of the total OS. which means that even if you don't use Siri or any LLM, you still are at the mercy of it being part of the OS), the base iPhone 17 might feel slow after just 3 or 4 years.
my iPhone SE2 had a good 6 years including a few weeks with iOS 26, and it still was going strong, until i retired it to buy my iPhone Air. one of the reasons to buy the Air was it has 12GB RAM.

You should have moved from XS Max to the Air. Same screen size and almost same battery capacity.

Which display do you have? I keep hearing that the base model more than likely has the inferior LG display

I don't care what display my 17 has! I like my 17 and that is all that matters to me!

Yeah, don’t pay attention to those strange people obsessing over specific panels when they can’t even tell the difference. If you need to check which one you’ve got just to notice it, they’re all perfectly fine.
