I bought this thing new in 1999 (or was it in early 2000?). I really stopped using it about 10 years ago, but it had a bunch of good family files on it, and hey - it was a classic.
I pulled it out last weekend, to ensure I had all the good photos off of the hard drive and to polish it up a bit.
DVD Rom drive was sticky - didn't want to accept or fully spit out CDs. Got my OS 9.2 startup AND 10.4 startup both working. Adjusted my date to a dead CMOS battery...
Then I went to go put it away. I placed it ever so gently on a love seat. Then I heard it topple onto the supple carpet below. Only, the concrete under the carpet trumped the hardness level and I heard a crunch...
I reached over to pick it up and the handle was loose from the case. But worse than that, I just heard the sound of glass trickling through that graphite polycarb case like beads in a rainmaker...
I killed my iMac.
I'm sad.
They aren't that easy to find any more at a great price. And they're heavy to ship. So here's my question - can I replace the CRT monitor? Will it come out? Can I use ANY iMac gumdrop monitor? Better to find another Graphite and just swap out the hard drive? Why even bother? I can't bear the thought of telling my wife. It was the first thing we bought together when we were married 19 years ago. Besides, having a Graphite iMac G3 400 DV SE is just kinda cool.
