i don't undestand why the new colors were released on January 30 rather than during the christmas season..i'm sure that the different colored shuffles would have sold more than they did during december but thats the past and yea thats it

There it is. The shuffle is dirt cheap, easy to use and now comes in different flavors!

Apple probably saw the popularity of the colored nanos (which begs the question why didn't they colorize the shuffle earlier in it's life?) and figured they can make some more money. Afterall, Apple is a business :)
 
Another reason is that Apple wants to clear its backlog first before releasing a new product. If they release something new before xmas, the old product wont be as popular so it will never get sold.
