Until yesterday Apple still sold the 2012-era 13" MBP with platter drive. My wife has this computer and I've upgraded it with an SSD. You know what? It's really pretty good for consumer usage. HD4000 and all. The price was just over half of the new one with 512 storage option.

I need at least 500GB storage. It's worth more to me than speed (which I'm losing anyway if I'm primarily keeping stuff on an inconvenient external drive). I'd love an updated option of that computer for a much lower price than the new offering. Even the price of the Air is outrageous if all you want is storage space. And if I can upgrade my own HD so much the better.

I always felt that the 2011-2012 13" cMBP with an upgrade to SSD and 16 GB of memory would handle 98% of users' needs. And being able to upgrade it yourself is priceless.
