I need some recommendations for a bag that can hold a 13MBP and about 3 textbooks that are each about an 1-1/2" inches. I prefer to stay away from "backpack" style of bags.

The backpack style bags are probably the best but since you don't like them, you can find plenty of MESSENGER bags on the market.

You just have to choose based on size, brand, etc.

It will def be a tight squeeze with 3 books and the MBP in a messenger bag though.

Be careful of pressure on the LCD with a messenger bag unless it has a dedicated hard laptop section (hard to find these). The waterfield racer-x comes to mind, though maybe a bit dry in styling.

The North Face Recon is absolutely perfect for the 13"! I highly recommend!

That's the one I use! A backpack with a laptop sleeve and a separate sleeve for notebooks and text books is the best. Beats out any messenger bag.

You know, I just ordered a Timbuk2 bag and am very excited about it but have been wondering about this.

The timbuk2 bag does have a padded compartment, but is it enough? Might have to settle for a backpack if this is damaging.

Take a look at a Dakine bag. I'm thinking about getting the duel, it has an external laptop sleeve right behind the back and a cooler pouch for drinks. I use a Dakine bag for snowboarding and it really does the trick.
