I need a good HD camcorder, but can't spend a fortune...

I purchased a standard def. camcorder back in January and to say the least, it sucks. I can't seem to find a camcorder that has solid video quality for under $300 so I want to widen my price point a bit and get a camcorder that's actually worth paying for. Obviously, cheaper = better but I want solid HD quality in light and dark situations and optical image stabilization... If anyone can suggest a brand or a specific model that would be great. Thanks!
