I currently own a 2017 iPad Pro 11" with the Smart Keyboard Folio - which was Apple's most elegant keyboard/case solution for the iPad (in my opinion). It's lightweight, thin, and can fold back behind the iPad for sketching/browsing without having to remove the case. It brilliantly complements the "mission" of the iPad as a more portable device than a laptop.

...and then Apple decided that iPads needed a trackpad, which ruined the form-factor. I can't eye-roll this enough. The consequence is that Apple stopped producing the Smart Keyboard Folio, and integration of trackpads now forces the depth of the cover to accommodate both a keyboard and track surface. Their solution? An offensively heavy, expensive, cumbersome, inflexible Apple Magic Keyboard...which I don't want to have to "remove" (what do I do with it?) while simply trying to consume media or use the Apple Pencil. Ugh.

I recognize that Apple sort of replaced the Smart Keyboard Folio with the Magic Keyboard Folio, but the keyboard doesn't fold behind the device either and has to be removed, and regardless, it's not even compatible with the Pro Models! Logitech does makes a similar form factor device for the Pro, even the 13"...and I'll admit I may have to settle for this...

I guess I'm just ranting, but the inelegance of all of these solutions is a barrier to a new purchase for me. I just wish Apple (or any 3rd party vendor) would offer an updated Smart Keyboard Folio product WITHOUT the trackpad. Any insight or alternatives? Anyone else feel the pain? 🤣

If you mostly use the keyboard at a desk, then you might consider using the iPad Pro in a Smart Folio and separate Logitech Keys-To-Go 2, the new version that uses coin batteries and scissor switches, a similar key shape and layout as the Smart Keyboard, a function key row, and no trackpad, which I also prefer not to have. Even Apple is selling it.

It's $79 and you could test it out before you invest in the new M4.

Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out, though that sort of forces me to carry around something separate (I often take just my iPad to meetings).

If you liked typing on the Smart Keyboard you'll like the key shape. As far as carrying, it's 8 oz, and slim. I don't fold the cover behind the keyboard when in use, but let the iPad with Smart Folio sit on the open cover, which makes it feel even more like the Smart Keyboard.
