I need an opinion on my mom's B-day gift...

I was thinkin' of doing a drawing for her. So should I pick a picture from her past, like her wedding or more recent? With my newly acquired "skills" I think I can pull of a pretty nice drawing, so what do you guys think?
 
That's a great idea. A close friend did this once for me and I love it. My friend incorporated other stuff in the portrait, so it wasn't just a picture of me. She incorporated a ribbon of film with frames from my favorite movies, some words, and other things relevant to my persona. In your case, it could turn your drawing from "my mom" to "what I love about my mom".

So do you have an opinion on whether it should be an older picture or more current?

Well I think you couldn't go wrong with making your mom look young. ;) Killer B-day present idea BTW, if I had any artistic talent whatsoever I'd do it too.
 
I'd say younger as well, but not too young. Pick sometime after you were born but before you did all those crazy things as a kid/teen that gave her the winkles she has today. :p

I agree, possibly a wedding shot would work great too. Either way, you can't go wrong. Great idea!
 
Hmmm ok, thanks for the input.

Maybe I can get some women (mothers possibly) input here. I know women can ge sensitive about this picture stuff so I want to make sure going with an older (younger face) picture would be ok.

Here's the final image. Hmm... I wonder if I should add some color to the flower since white flowers are for death in Chinese. I'm not superstitious, but it's stuck in my head now. Then again there's no color anywhere, so it's not really a white lotus. yea...
 
That is truely amazing. I would NEVER be able to do something like that. I'm sure your mom will love it.;)
 
I'd say give the flower color... I've always loved pictures where everything is black and white with one bit of color thrown in (the movie Pleasantville made me ridiculously happy for this reason alone...)

Yea that's what I was thinkin' too, but I would also like to preserve the "strictly" graphite composition. I'll give it to her like this and ask her if she wants some color thrown into it... or maybe I'll change my decision by Friday and change it. We'll see.
