That's a great idea. A close friend did this once for me and I love it. My friend incorporated other stuff in the portrait, so it wasn't just a picture of me. She incorporated a ribbon of film with frames from my favorite movies, some words, and other things relevant to my persona. In your case, it could turn your drawing from "my mom" to "what I love about my mom".
Well I think you couldn't go wrong with making your mom look young.So do you have an opinion on whether it should be an older picture or more current?
I'd say younger as well, but not too young. Pick sometime after you were born but before you did all those crazy things as a kid/teen that gave her the winkles she has today.![]()

I'd say give the flower color... I've always loved pictures where everything is black and white with one bit of color thrown in (the movie Pleasantville made me ridiculously happy for this reason alone...)
