I Need Help Bad

ok so i just bought an airport express, got it hooked up to my speakers, through my network with is a SMC modem taht works awesome music plays great BUT,, i cant setup the airport express so i can be an extender all i want it to do i sit in my living room and extend my internet from my wireless route down stairs it keeps fucing up and cant do, im running mac os x snow, and like i said the music part works great but in no ay shape or form can igt this express to etend my internet further in my house please help me please

you can only extend networks that come from another apple device.

so basicly i need an extreme router? i got 2 mac copyters in my home and one airport express station thats joined with the router i ahve, but it isnt acting as an extender WTF?
