Hi im just looking for something that will do light stuff in the office - word processing and photoshop.

Needs to run big sur, 15 inch widescreen, space grey would be nice. Budget is $600 but maybe more if needed but definitely can't go over $800.

What would you recommend?

Thanks for looking.

Can't go wrong with a 2015 MBP. I was just looking at eBay a little bit ago and that seems to be in it's price range. Lots of expansion options as well. Two additional benefits are that it has a nice keyboard and doesn't have the Touch Bar. If TB is needed then 2016 or newer.

do you know of any good places to buy used online?

also avoid 2016 - 2019 MBP models they have butterfly models and have keyboard problems.

2020 MBP have a scissor keyboard they are MUCH better.

for the $600 budget get 2015 MBP used, DO NOT get 2016-2019.

Butterfly 2016-2017 have first gen butterfly keyboards that are prone to dust.

2018 have 3rd gen butterfly keyboard with silicone membrane, that's prone to warping (usually i/e/r keys fail, where the hot stuff is underneath)
2019 4th gen supposedly fix stuff, but i've seen reports similar to 2018.

I would guess that the MacBook Pro 2015 will go vintage in summer 2022 the latest (7 years after its release). Maybe even this summer (5 years after release of its successor). The MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) has been 'vintaged' last summer.

You can of course use a vintage model way beyond that date, but you'll run into troubles regarding repairs, and you won't get updates beyond Big Sur or the next macOS release.

Apple sold the 2015 15” MBP until 2018. It was the cheaper option alongside the 2016 MBP and then the 2017 MBP. The 2015 15” was discontinued along with the 2017 15” when the 2018 15” MBP was released.

My 2017 15” MBP (purchased in 2018) is still under Applecare+ and there should be 2015 15” models still under AC+ as well.
It won’t go vintage (stopped selling for 5 years) until mid-2023.

It’s also why the older 2013 Mac Pro desktop isn’t vintage yet. Apple was still selling it until basically the release of the 2019 Mac Pro.

If the budget is fixed, would you consider a 13-inch? You aren't going to find a 15-inch Space Gray Mac for $600-800 in even marginally acceptable condition. The budget you have would get you a 2016 SG 13-inch without the touch bar. However, the 2016 model is absolutely riddled with issues and not a system I would recommend.

If you are looking to buy from a company and not an individual, Mac of All Trades is a good place to go. They are reputable and you get a warranty, plus you can purchase an extended warranty. Here is a 2016 13-inch:
Again, I want to note these are riddled with problems, and the 2015 model (which is the older chassis style and is NOT available in SG) is a much more reliable system than this.

Here is a 13-inch 2015 MBP-it's a very solid system and would serve you well
