Hi Guys,
Here's the deal. I apologise in advance for not making the title more specific but I thought it may be best to bung them all into one thread than start many new threads.
OK, a little background. I had an idea years ago to put something back into the community but having a dodgy spine means I can't do charity runs etc so here's what I did.
I opened my shed as an Internet cafe.
**Waits for laughing to stop**
It's actually a big shed and seats 8 once you get past the lawn mower and tumble dryer
The entrance fee is a look at photo ID that shows your age as over 60 (men and women) and use of the computers is free but tea and coffee is 10p a mug :)
It doesn't really cost me anything because my broadband package is unlimited anyway.
Some of the people who use the shed have been coming along once or twice a week for 2 years but I think a lot of it is for the chat rather than PC use.
Anyway, to get back on track, I had 4 Windows based PCs in there and all was going well until one of them died. The man in the shop (who works on my stuff for free) said the motherboard was fried and not worth repairing so I was on the look-out for another PC on eBay within collecting distance. Then I saw the MAC in my sig and bought it for £2.21p without the monitor. My thinking being that I have heard tell that MACs are more secure so I'd have a go.
It's in my living room just now but will move out to the shed once I get it running at "best speed"
I have already bought a Wi-Fi dongle for use with this MAC on any OS above 8.5 so that should be sorted.
I guess it could use more RAM so if anybody knows the specific type I need to look for on eBay (UK) that would be excellent.
Also, if I wanted to upgrade to a brand of OSX, what do I need?
This MAC has a CD drive so any install disks need to be CDs and not DVDs UNLESS a DVD writer from a windows PC will work in a MAC even if only as a DVD reader??
I also notice that there are a few different types of OS X software. First off there are Upgrades and Full install disks. But then there are disks with a big silver "X" on a black background. Grey disks with usually white writing and then white disks with a cross in a fur design.
If I wanted to install a version of OSX, which would be best to use?
Last but not least, I am going to need to install some software on this MAC. I'm guessing that there is a flavour of Open Office that works on a MAC but, bearing in mind what it is going to be used for, any suggestions for further software would be appreciated. Stuff like best browser would be good.
Sorry to have rambled on for so long but you'll eventually get used to me, lol
Many thanks,
Steve
