i need help restoring my new iphone with my old iphone bakup

i just got an iphone 3g with 3.1.3 firmware. i also have an iphone 3g running 4.0.2 or 4.0 firmware..the 4.0 firmware iphone screen cracked so i backed it up and it wont let me restore to my new iphone (3.1.3)...its not even an option what i try to restore from backup...apple customer service told me it because the firmwares are differant...does anyone know how to resore my iphone 3g 4.0 back up to my iphone 3g 3.1.3..thanks guys
